FRIENDS OF UCR BOTANIC GARDENS
'In the Garden' Class/Tour Series - Spring 2009

The Friends of UCR Botanic Gardens are proud to offer another season of our 'In the Garden' Botanic Garden Class/Tour series. Our previous seasons of classes held in gardens were so successful that the classes filled very quickly. Come and learn in these gardens:

Saturday, March 14, 2009, 9:30 a.m. to noon The Hemenway garden. This is a remarkable example of a succulent and cactus garden. Buck and Yvonne Hemmenway are both Master Gardeners, nursery owners, and avid collectors. Their collection includes very water wise plants from Australia and South Africa, where they've studied the local flora, and other Mediterranean areas.

Saturday, April 18, 2009, 9:30 a.m. to noon 'Edible Flowers and Other Uses for Herbs in Your Garden' April is the perfect month to tour the newly renovated herb garden that represents many Colonial favorites as well as those unique to the West. Jean will describe their uses with an emphasis on edible flowers. You will then be invited to sample delicious herbal refreshments and take home a copy of the recipes. Please join us to pinch, sniff and taste spring herbs in the Garden. Presenter: Jean Weiss, Master Gardener and herbal plant enthusiast.

Saturday, May 16, 2009, 9:30 a.m. to noon The Bazarko garden. Attendees will visit the ¾ acre, two-tiered garden of Sharon Bazarko. Sharon has lovingly collected 146 different roses and 86 different tall bearded irises, a sight to be seen. She will describe the care of both genera, as well as highlighting her favorites. In addition, she has a dedicated area for succulents.

Presentations help raise funds for the UCR Botanic Gardens. Each presentation is $30 for Friends, $35 for non-members. For registration information contact Nan Simonsen at 951-951-218-1250, or write Hm2grdn@aol.com. The address of presentation will be e-mailed, or mailed to you. Questions? Contact Nan.

Once there, docents guide our 90 minute tour. We have the pleasure of seeing and learning about The Garden of Flowing Fragrance. The garden reflects traditional Suzhou style "scholar" gardens. It is set against a wooded backdrop of mature oaks and pines, surrounding a 1.5 acre lake. It features a complex of pavilions, a tea house, and 5 stone bridges. This initial phase of the garden covers 3.5 acres of a planned 12 acre site, and was 10 years in the making.

Following the private tour, we are on our own at The Huntington. Everything opens to the public at 10:30 a.m. From this time, we can discover or rediscover the delights of this beautiful 120 acre estate. You can enjoy The Library, The Art Collections, a wonderful gift store, and over 12 thematic gardens, containing more than 15,000 different species of plants. There are three places for lunch, including tea and dim-sum at the Chinese Gardens, The Café', and The Rose Garden Tea Room.**

We board the bus and leave for home at 2:30 p.m. Happily unwinding and sharing the events of the day, we eat our snacks, have a beverage or a glass of wine and enjoy being ferried home.

**Reservations are recommended for the Tea Room. The ample "tea" there is currently $24.95 per person. The tea room is open from 10:45 a.m. Call 626.683.8131. No picnicking is allowed on the grounds.

Annual Rose Pruning Demonstration
Sunday, January 17, 2010, 1 to 3 p.m.

The public is invited to the U.C. Riverside Botanic Gardens to attend the Annual Rose Pruning Demonstration. The demonstration is scheduled for Sunday, January 17, 2010 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Rose Garden. (In case of rain on January 17, the demonstration will be postponed to the following Sunday, January 24). Botanic Gardens Volunteers and local experts will demonstrate how to prune hybrid tea, floribunda, miniature roses and climbers. Door prizes will be awarded to selected attendees.

Started in 1975, the Gardens' rose collection boasts more than 300 rose bushes of various types from around the world, some dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, making it one of the most comprehensive public displays of roses in the Inland Empire. All of the roses growing in the lower garden are award-winners.

Parking at the Gardens is 25 cents per hour (overflow parking may be more) and the suggested admission donation to the Gardens is $1. The Rose Pruning Demonstration is free, though donations are always gratefully accepted. For more information on the Rose Pruning Demonstration contact us.
