February Bird Walk Breakfast

The UCR Botanic Gardens is offering a guided bird walk and breakfast in the Gardens on
Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010.
The walks will start at the front gate at 7:30 a.m. We will bird the gardens for approximately an
hour, then have a continental breakfast in Alder Canyon, where we can compose our checklist
and talk over our sightings. The mid-February date will give us the opportunity to see the regular
winter residents, and possibly an early migrant or two. The walk will be led by Janet Clegg and
Norm Ellstrand, both long-time birders around Riverside.
Admission will be $15 and there is a nominal charge for parking. Reservations are
required -- RSVP to the Gardens at ucrbg@ucr.edu or by calling 951-784-6962. We hope
you can join us!

Spring 2010 'In the Garden Class/Tour' Series - The Hemenway Garden
Saturday, February 20, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Visit and learn from the 'Two Worlds' garden of Buck and Yvonne Hemenway, both Master
Gardeners, nursery owners, and avid collectors. Their cactus and succulent gardens
consists of old world South African, and new world American species, all fascinating, many
rare. The Hemenways have traveled twice to South Africa and will share their newest
insights into this fascinating area of the world.
The class fee is $35 for non-members and $30 for Friends of the Botanic Gardens
members. Payment is due in advance of class. To register, send checks made

This garden visit is truly a garden tour. We will meet at the Maloof Foundation for Arts and
Crafts, a 5 acre, private foundation and botanic garden in Alta Loma. This diverse water-wise
garden is a combination of California Native and Mediterranean plants. Attendees will
learn how to create the look of this beautiful garden on any size lot.

Spring 2010 'In the Garden Class/Tour' Series - The Eva Mayer Garden
Saturday, April 10, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Presenter Eva Mayer will focus on creative garden features in small spaces, offering her
Riverside garden as an example. Her small residential lot has many landscape surprises,
including wonderful structures, all of which Eva created on a limited budget. She will teach
her methods of gardening creatively and inexpensively in a small space. Although water-wise, Eva's garden is graced with a lush romantic and cottage like ambience.
The class fee is $35 for non-members and $30 for Friends of the Botanic Gardens

Spring 2010 'In the Garden Class/Tour' Series - "Edible Flowers in Your Garden"
Saturday, May 8, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon
After a resounding success of the previous fall version of the class, we are offering a
spring sampling of more tasty and colorful recipes of using edible flowers. While touring
the spectacular garden of Lucy and Frank Heyming in peak season, Master Gardeners
Lucy Heyming and Jean Weiss will explain growing and eating all the edible flowers that
enhance the design. You will then enjoy a luncheon buffet of delicious appetizers, salads
and desserts while sipping lavender lemonade. All recipes will be provided at this unique
culinary event.

Primavera in the Gardens

The 12th Annual PRIMAVERA IN THE GARDENS is coming! Riverside's premier wine
and food tasting event takes place on Sunday, May 16th from 2 to 5 p.m. at the UCR Botanic
Gardens. Nearly 500 people attended in 2009. Tickets to the fund raiser are $50 per person by reservation and $60 at the gate. For additional information, call 951-784-6962.
Imagine yourself in an idyllic garden setting - strolling down verdant pathways, nibbling
delicious appetizers; sitting under tall shade trees tasting terrific regional wines; all the while
the dappled sunlight warms your face and kisses the colorful spring blooms. You are
surrounded by the murmurs of pleasant conversation and happy laughter and the soft sounds
of live music, this year highlighted by the band, Incendio. This is PRIMAVERA IN THE
GARDENS!
Tantalizing appetizers are provided by wonderful restaurants and caterers from all over
Riverside. Primavera 2009 included Cafe Sevilla, Ciao Bella, Cuban Café, Gerard's Eve
Bistro, Gra-Pow, Jammin' Bread, Mario's Place, Olio's at the Marriott, Omakase, Saffron at
the Riverside Art Museum, Simple Simon's, Smokey Canyon BBQ, The Cooking Store, The
Tamale Factory, Tin Lizzy's Cookie Factory, UCR Dining Services and Coffee Roasters.
Wines are proffered by regional vineyards and wineries, and in 2009 included BevMo!
Corona, Callaway Vineyard & Winery, Canyon Crest Winery, Falkner Winery, Galleano,
Hart Winery, Joseph Filippi Winery & Vineyard, Keyways Vineyard & Winery, Lorenzi's,
Oak Mt. Winery, and South Coast Winery and Resort, as well as beers from Hangar 24 Craft
Brewery and Inland Empire Brewery.
In addition, there will be the excitement of a Silent Auction, featuring dozens of garden-related items.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Botanic Gardens' many deserving projects, including

Annual Rose Pruning Demonstration
Sunday, January 16, 2011, 1 to 3 p.m.
The public is invited to the U.C. Riverside Botanic Gardens to attend the Annual Rose Pruning Demonstration. The demonstration is scheduled for Sunday, January 16, 2011 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Rose Garden. (In case of rain on January 16, the demonstration will be postponed to the following Sunday, January 23). Botanic Gardens Volunteers and local experts will demonstrate how to prune hybrid tea, floribunda, miniature roses and climbers. Door prizes will be awarded to selected attendees.
Started in 1975, the Gardens' rose collection boasts more than 300 rose bushes of various types from around the world, some dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, making it one of the most comprehensive public displays of roses in the Inland Empire. All of the roses growing in the lower garden are award-winners.
There is a nominal fee for Parking at the Gardens (overflow parking may be more) and the suggested admission donation to the Gardens is $2. The Rose Pruning Demonstration is free, though donations are always gratefully accepted. For more information on the Rose Pruning Demonstration contact us.
