Public Sale Saturday, October 17, 12 noon to 5 pm and Sunday, October 18, 9 am to 3 pm



KEY TO THE CODES AT END OF THE PLANT DESCRIPTIONS:

H* - attracts Hummingbirds
B* - attracts Butterflies or feeds butterfly larvae
W* - Water efficient/drought tolerant plants
C* - California native plant or derivative
F* - especially good cut Flower or cut Foliage
S* - fragrant flowers ("S" for Scented)

The number of plants we expect to have available at the sale appears in brackets at the end of the plant description.

Abutilon pictum 'Aureo-maculatum', "FLOWERING MAPLE" - Fast-growing, evergreen shrub w/ maple-like leaves spotted & blotched w/ glowing yellow-white & nodding, bell-shaped, yellow-orange flowers w/ crimson veins over long season. [13/11/10] (H*)

Anemone hybrida 'Pamina', "JAPANESE ANEMONE" - Long-lived, spreading perennial w/ soft, lobed, basal leaves & tall, graceful, branching stems topped in fall by elegant, semi-double, rose pink flowers; partial shade. [13] (F*)

Anemone hybrida 'Prince Henry', "JAPANESE ANEMONE" - Long-lived, spreading perennial w/ soft, lobed, basal leaves & tall, graceful, branching stems topped in fall by elegant, semi-double, purple-red flowers; partial shade. [9] (F*)

Aspidistra elatior, "CAST-IRON PLANT" - Victorian favorite - tough plant indoors or outdoors, w/ bold, deep green, long-stalked leaves; can take even deep shade & some drought. [15/10]

Aucuba japonica 'Variegata', "GOLD DUST PLANT" - Sturdy shrub for shade densly clothed in shiny, dark green, coarsely toothed leaves that are handsomely spotted glowing yellow; dark maroon flowers inconspicuous. [12]

Begonia grandis, "HARDY BEGONIA" - Hardiest begonia; angular, coppery leaves w/ red undersides topped by sprays of dainty, pink flowers over long summer season; spreads by bulblets in leaf axils. [20] (H*)

Begonia 'Pink Shasta', "SHRUB BEGONIA" - Shrubby begonia w/ succulent stems, shiny, wing-shaped, ruffled leaves & clusters of glistening coral pink flowers w/ yellow centers over long summer season; flowers edible. [19] (H*)

Billbergia nutans hybrid (#1), "QUEEN'S TEARS" - Exotic perennial w/ urn-shaped clusters of sea green leaves & pink-bracted, pendulous spikes of blue, green & yellow flowers; containers or landscape. [22] (H*F*)

Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance', "VARIEGATED JAPANESE SEDGE" - Moisture-loving, grass-like plant forming carpeting mounds of slender, gracefully arching, deep green leaves w/ creamy-white margins. [29]

Clerodendrum chinense pleniflorum, "GLORY BOWER" - Rare, open shrub spreading underground by runners; large, heart-shaped leaves & rounded, bouquet-like clusters of sweetly fragrant, pale pink, double flowers over long summer season. [8] (B*F*S*)

Costus barbatus, "STEPLADDER PLANT" - Rare tropical plant w/ handsome foliage spirally-arranged on cane-like stems & exotic, red-bracted, conelike inflorescence bearing yellow, tubular flowers; mildest inland areas or protected patios. [29] (H*F*)

Elettaria cardamomom, "CARDAMOM" - Cardamom of commerce grown here for bold, tropical-looking, deliciously aromatic foliage on cane-like stems; has not flowered or fruited for us. [18/11] (F*S*)

Fuchsia 'Gartenmeister', "GARTENMEISTER FUCHSIA" - Evergreen shrub for container or landscape w/ dark, reddish foliage & spikes of pendant, salmon-red flowers over long season; selected for inland gardens; hummingbird favorite. [5] (H*)

Fuchsia (Jack's red & violet cascade), "FUCHSIA" - Inland tested, reliable fuchsia; lush, green foliage on pendant branches & abundant flowers that are dainty, 1.5 in., red & violet bells, produced in summer/fall; hummingbird favorite. [10] (H*)

Geranium maderense, "MADEIRA CRANESBILL" - Most unusual & giant true geranium w/ handsome, finely divided leaves & enormous, branching, inflorescence of many 1-in., dark magenta flowers over long spring season. [25] (B*)

Hedychium coronarium, "WHITE GINGER LILY" - Dramatic perennial w/ bold, tropical-looking foliage on cane-like stems & 6-12-in., cone-like spikes of exotic, glistening white, deliciously scented flowers in fall. [10/8] (F*S*)

Hypericum androsaemum, "SWEET-AMBER, TUTSAN" - Near evergreen, mounding shrub w/ medium green leaves, clusters of 3/4 in., golden yellow flowers in summer & attractive, berry-like fruits that are a commercial cutflower. [29] (F*)

Justicia aurea, "GOLDEN PLUME" - Spectacular, subtropical shrub for part or light shade; rich green, bold foliage & long lasting, dense, foot-long spikes of bright yellow, tubular flowers in winter. [7] (H*)

Justicia 'Fruit Salad', "SHRIMP PLANT" - Tender shrub for part or light shade in a protected spot; produces red-bracted, shrimp-shaped spikes of white tubular flowers over long spring to summer season. [29] (H*)

Justicia rizzinii, "FIRECRACKER FLOWER" - Tender, compact shrub for part or light shade in a protected spot; small, mid-green leaves & clusters of tubular, red & yellow flowers in winter. [7] (H*)

Lamium maculatum 'Aureum', "SPOTTED NETTLE" - Striking groundcover perennial or hanging basket plant for shade; light green & gold, toothed leaves w/ silver mid-stripe & spikes of pink flowers in summer. [12]

Liriope spicata 'Silver Dragon', "CREEPING LILY TURF" - Reliable & versatile groundcover for shade, wide-spreading by underground stems; handsome, grass-like, deep green leaves finely striped w/ white; can be invasive. [15]

Malvaviscus arboreus var. mexicanus, "TURKSCAP" - Medium-sized, spreading or clambering shrub w/ fresh green foliage & red, pendulous flowers throughout warm weather; hummingbird favorite. [24] (H*)

Malvaviscus mollis, "SLEEPING HIBISCUS" - Spreading or clambering shrub w/ velvety, bright green, maple-like leaves & red, tube-shaped flowers throughout warm weather; hummingbird favorite. [5] (H*)

Monstera deliciosa, "SPLIT-LEAF PHILODENDRON" - Tropical vine w/ thick stem, huge, long-stalked leaves that are deeply divided & perforated, 10-in., white, calla-like flowers & edible fruit (must be completely ripe to eat); protect from frost. [5]

Nephrolepis obliterata 'Medusa', "MEDUSA FERN" - Compact Boston fern relative hardy enough for landscape in mildest Inland areas; tight clumps of stiff, feather-shaped, bright green fronds to 1 ft. tall; multiplies by wiry runners. [11]

Odontonema strictum, "CARDINAL'S GUARD" - Fast-growing, bold, evergreen shrub for shade or part shade w/ handsome, deep green leaves & contrasting spikes of red, tubular flowers. [18] (H*F*)

Pellaea rotundifolia, "BUTTON FERN" - True fern, for landscape or patio/houseplant; tight clumps of fronds w/ dark main stem lined with round, deep green leaflets; near dry between waterings. [3]

Plectranthus forsteri 'Marginatus', "WHITE-EDGED PLECTRANTHUS" - Viny perennial for light shade, related to coleus; velvety, medium green, ovate leaves margined irregularly creamy white; spikes of tiny, pale mauve flowers produced intermittently. [12] (B*W*)

Plectranthus fruticosa, "SPUR FLOWER" - Pretty, shrubby perennial w/ textured, heart-shaped leaves becomes covered in many branching spikes of tiny, blue-purple flowers in fall. [L-DF/L-IF] (B*)

Polypodium guttatum, "MEX. LEATHERY POLYPODY" - Choice, Mexican, true fern w/ leathery, rich green, once-divided fronds growing upright from a short-creeping rhizome; good drainage in filtered sun or shade. [10]

Pyrrosia lingua 'Variegata', "VARIEG. JAPANESE FELT FERN" - Rare, variegated form of this tough, true fern, w/ wiry, creeping rhizomes & leathery, tongue-shaped green fronds marked yellow-green; hanging basket or small-scale groundcover. [15]

Rhapis excelsa, "DWARF LADY PALM" - Choice, slow-growing palm w/ bamboo-like, fiber-covered stems, hand-shaped, rich green fronds w/ pleated, finger-like divisions; one of the finest houseplants. [5]

Ribes viburnifolium, "CATALINA PERFUME" - Calif. native, evergreen, wide-spreading shrub for dry shade; handsome, shiny, dark green foliage is deliciously fruit scented; small, rose pink flowers in winter/spring. [15] (W*C*)

Salvia chiapensis, "CHIAPAS SAGE" - Perennial of open habit to 3 ft. tall by 4 ft. wide, w/ shiny, rich green leaves & erect, foot-long spikes of tubular, magenta flowers in summer; hummingbird favorite. [14/10] (H*)

Schefflera arboricola, "HAWAIIAN ELF SCHEFFLERA" - Shrub for protected landscape location or house/patio plant; deep green, 6-in. leaves divided like a hand into 3-in. pointed leaflets; excellent container plant; flowers unimportant. [9]

Veltheimia bracteata, "VELTHEIMIA" - Choice bulb for light shade w/ handsome, wavy-edged, shiny foliage & long-stemmed, spike-like clusters of tubular, green-tipped pink flowers in late winter/early spring. [19] (H*F*)

Woodwardia fimbriata, "GIANT CHAIN FERN" - Hard to find, Calif. native, fern forming upright clumps of bright green, lacy fronds, the backs often with a chain-stitch pattern of spores; surprisingly tough once established. [32] (C*)
