FALL PLANT SALE

Public Sale Saturday, October 17, 12 noon to 5 pm and Sunday, October 18, 9 am to 3 pm



KEY TO THE CODES AT END OF THE PLANT DESCRIPTIONS:

H* - attracts Hummingbirds
B* - attracts Butterflies or feeds butterfly larvae
W* - Water efficient/drought tolerant plants
C* - California native plant or derivative
F* - especially good cut Flower or cut Foliage
S* - fragrant flowers ("S" for Scented)

Acacia berlandieri, "GUAJILLO" - Large shrub or small, multi-stemmed tree; heat loving w/ fernlike, light green leaves -- flowers fragrant, ball-like puffs of stamens, white aging to cream & born in early spring. [20/7] (W*S*)

Acacia farnesiana 'Sierra Sweet', "SEEDLESS SWEET ACACIA" - Tough, water efficient small tree w/ spiny branches & tiny, ferny leaves; flowers are fragrant, golden puffs covering the tree in winter/spring; few messy seedpods produced. [15] (H*W*S*)

Aesculus californica, "CALIF. BUCKEYE" - Drought tolerant, California native tree w/ hand-shaped leaves & foot-long plumes of creamy white, fragrant flowers in spring. [11] (H*B*W*C*S*)

Arbutus 'Marina', "STRAWBERRY TREE" - Choice, evergreen tree related to manzanita w/ handsome bark, large, deep green leaves, clusters of tiny, pink, urn-shaped flowers in fall. [20] (H*W*)

Arctostaphylos densiflorus 'Sentinel', "VINE HILL MANZANITA" - Sturdy trunked small tree/shrub to 8 ft. tall & 8 ft. wide w/ smooth, reddish black bark, small, gray leaves & clusters of tiny, light pink, urn-shaped flowers in spring; needs good drainage. [20] (H*B*W*C*)

Arctostaphylos manzanita 'Dr. Hurd', "DR. HURD MANZANITA" - Calif. native small tree or large shrub to 15 ft. w/ mahogany bark, large, light green leaves & clusters of white, urn-shaped flowers in late winter; well adapted to gardens & handsome all year. [7] (H*B*W*C*)

Bauhinia variegata, "PURPLE ORCHID TREE" - Spectacular, deciduous tree w/ light green, 2-lobed leaves & 3-in. purple, orchidlike flowers in late winter/early spring (a few may have white flowers). [6] (H*)

Caesalpinia mexicana, "MEXICAN BIRD-OF-PARADISE" - Heat-loving, small tree or large shrub w/ ferny, blue-green leaves & showy clusters of lemon yellow flowers throughout warm weather; needs good drainage. [20] (H*W*)

Callistemon 'King's Park Special', "KING'S PARK SPECIAL BOTTLE BRUSH" - Hybrid small tree/large shrub w/ narrow leaves & masses of bright red, bottlebrush flowers over long spring & summer season; hummingbird favorite. [20] (H*W*)

Calocedrus decurrens, "INCENSE CEDAR" - Large, Calif. native, evergreen tree w/ dense, pyramidal crown & aromatic foliage & wood; branches popular in holiday decorating. [16] (W*C*)

Casimiroa edulis, "WHITE SAPOTE" - Subtropical tree, deciduous in frost, w/ shiny green, hand-shaped, leaves & 3-4 in., pale yellow fruit w/ tropical flavor & custard-like texture (seedlings of 'Vernon'). [39]

Castanospermum australe, "MORETON BAY CHESTNUT" - Striking, evergreen tree w/ large, dark green, glossy, divided leaves & 8 in. spikes of bright red & yellow, sweetpea-shaped flowers in summer, born even on trunk & main branches. [18/15] (H*B*)

Cercis occidentalis, "WESTERN REDBUD" - Calif. native tree w/ all-year interest - masses of purple spring flowers, handsome foliage & seedpods, yellow fall color, picturesque branching. [25] (H*W*C*F*)

Citrofortunella microcarpa, "CALAMONDIN" - Columnar, evergreen small tree or shrub w/ lush, dark green foliage, fragrant white flowers & a heavy crop of small, very sour, mandarin-like fruit used in marmelade & cooking; very ornamental. [25] (B*S*)

Citrus aurantifolia, "MEXICAN LIME, KEY LIME" - Evergreen large shrub/ small tree for mildest Inland gardens; fragrant, white flowers & small, tart-fleshed fruit that is yellow when ripe; seedlings of 'Giant Key Lime'. [16] (B*S*)

Citrus grandis x paradisi 'Oroblanco', "OROBLANCO GRAPEFRUIT HYBRID" - Grapefruit/Pummelo hybrid -- an evergreen tree w/ large, handsome, dark green leaves, fragrant, white flowers & large, sweet-fleshed grapefruit-like fruits in spring (rootstock: 'Carrizo'). [6] (B*S*)

Citrus hystrix, "KIEFFIR LIME, MAKRUT" - Choice, evergreen large shrub or small tree with hourglass shaped leaves, white, fragrant flowers & small, bumpy fruit; both leaves & fruit popular in Thai & other asian cooking. [10] (B*S*)

Crinodendron patagua, "LILY-OF-THE-VALLEY TREE" - Choice, Chilean tree w/ appearance of evergreen oaks; small, leathery, holly-like leaves & dainty, bell-shaped, white flowers & attractive cream & red seed capsules. [17] (W*)

Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans', "PLUME CEDAR" - Dense, slow-growing, evergreen conifer w/ tiered branches & feathery, blue-green foliage that turns a striking bronze-purple in winter. [20]

Cupressus arizonica 'Blue Pyramid', "ARIZONA CYPRESS" - Arizona native, drought tolerant, evergreen tree, this selection a dense, blue-gray pyramid to 25 ft.; rough, furrowed bark, tiny, scale-like leaves & hard, round cones. [20] (W*C*)

Erythrina cristi-galli, "COCKSPUR CORAL TREE" - Unusual, small tree or large shrub w/ thick branches & clusters of velvety, brick or wine red flowers intermittent over long spring to fall season; hummingbird favorite. [13] (H*)

Firmiana simplex, "CHINESE PARASOL TREE" - Choice, deciduous tree w/ distinctive, thick branches, huge lobed leaves & handsome green bark; small, yellow flowers are followed by interesting, leaf-like pods; good street or lawn tree. [56]

Ginkgo biloba, "GINKGO TREE" - Slow-growing, deciduous tree w/ light green, fan-shaped leaves that color yellow in fall; unsexed seedlings -- female trees may bear malodorous fruit, edible seeds. [45]

Heteromeles arbutifolia, "TOYON" - Versatile, Calif. native, water-efficient small tree/large shrub w/ toothed, glossy green leaves, large clusters of white flowers in summer, showy red berries in winter. [21] (H*B*W*C*)

Rhamnus prinoides, "AFRICAN DOGWOOD" - Rare, evergreen, South African, large shrub/small tree w/ dark green, shiny leaves & berries that start out green, then turn yellow, red & then black -- w/ all colors appearing at once. [6] (F*)

Sabal mexicana, "OAXACA PALMETTO" - Handsome, heat-loving, slow-growing palm w/ 3-ft., dark green, fan-shaped fronds, eventually forming a slender trunk to 50 ft.; said to be hardy to 10 degrees F. [6]
